Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Nacht und Träume, D. 827 (arr.)
An die Musik, D. 547 (arr.)
Der Jüngling an der Quelle, D. 300 (arr.)
Arpeggione” Sonata, D. 821

Composed in 1824, the Sonata in A minor is one of the rare works Franz Schubert wrote for the arpeggione, a now-obsolete string instrument. Alternating between melodic lines and more dramatic outbursts, he employs a remarkably fluid compositional style, supported by a refined interplay with the piano. Soon transcribed for other instruments, most notably the cello, the sonata secured a lasting place in the repertoire. Thus unfolds a composition in which Schubert’s melodic imagination is showcased in all its glory.
