In late 17th‑ and early 18th‑century France, the so‑called Brunettes were highly fashionable. These short strophic songs, with their pastoral and gallant character, were published by the Parisian publisher Ballard and widely performed in salons as well as at court, giving rise to numerous instrumental arrangements. Beneath their apparent simplicity lies a refined art of melody and ornamentation, at the crossroads of song, air de cour and chamber music.
