Schubert composed most of his string quartets in his youth, a testimony of the teenage years of a precocious genius. Only the final three quartets hold the mark of a mature composer, if such term suits a musician who died at the age of 31. Schubert composed his fifteenth and final quartet hastily in June 1826; it was only published posthumously in 1851. It is an exceptionally rich, powerful and dramatic work that explores an abundance of thematical ideas and moods.
