Cellist Paul Heyman and pianist Wouter Valvekens are playing two masterpieces from the Romantic era: the two Sonatas for cello and piano by Felix Mendelssohn. This genius 19th-century composer left us a treasure trove of great chamber music. Enthusiasm and brilliance, as well as expression and elegance also characterise his musical craftmanship in these cello sonatas.

Felix Mendelssohn shows himself to be a true master of the chamber music genre. He wrote a range of works for different instrumentations, which are still firmly established on concert stages today, such as his two Pianotrios, or his Octet for eight strings. These Sonatas for piano and cello are lesser known. Mendelssohn is known for his lyrical melodies, and this certainly applies to these cello sonatas as well. The music is expressive and emotional, and the cello often plays the leading melody.

Paul Heyman and Wouter Valvekens are two Belgian top musicians.

  • Paul Heyman received his training from Raphael Wallfisch in Zurich and graduated with the highest distinction. He perfected his talent with Vladimir Perlin, Pieter Wispelwey, Natalia Gutman, France Springuel, Gary Hoffman and others.
  • Wouter Valvekens studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, with Polina Leschenko and Ian Fountain, where he obtained his master’s degree. In 2020, he started his studies on historical instruments with Piet Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
