Two hours of opera with internationally renowned soloists, that's what the Brussels Triomphe de l'Art offers with the brilliant comic opera La Cenerentola, better known as Cinderella. This is Rossini at his best: lively and sparkling music in which his mastery of the bel canto style shines through.
Initially underrated, La Cenerentola has since conquered the world. The final breakthrough? When the then young Cecilia Bartoli finally established her name as a sparkling colouratura mezzo with La Cenerentola in 1993. Only the greatest stars could sing the title role, with its frenetic tempi and breathtaking passages.
In the fairy tale told by the Brussels Triomphe de l'Art, there is no glass slipper, no good fairy and no wicked stepmother. But there is a good prince, two silly sisters and, of course, the sweet Cinderella herself. That means there is unmasked vanity, overwhelming love and, of course, magic. The magic is in Rossini's music, in his subtle musical humour that underlines the true value of life and the triumph of love.
- Sung in Italian with Dutch surtitles.
