Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
Four Ballades
With his Four Ballades, Chopin created one of the most distinctive forms in Romantic piano music. Written between 1831 and 1842, these ballads combine a strongly narrative character with sharp contrasts, intense lyricism and great freedom of form. By turns meditative, heroic or passionate, these pieces demonstrate how Chopin employs the piano as a narrative instrument. Julien Brocal reveals the poetic layers and inner coherence of these cornerstones of the piano repertoire.
