Composed in 1841, Das Jahr is a cycle of twelve piano pieces inspired by the months of the year. Fanny Mendelssohn drew on her stay in Italy to create a musical diary, in which each piece evokes its own atmosphere, season or memory. Moving between poetic sketch and pianistic fresco, the work unfolds a free and imaginative style, placing this distinctive cycle at the heart of the Romantic piano repertoire.
