Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz is one of the seminal works of the German Romantic era. Created in 1821, this opera combines folk legends, the mysteries of the forest and human passions in music rich in colour and contrasts. In Karl Flach’s arrangement for ten wind instruments, the work’s orchestral vitality comes vividly to the fore: the winds’ timbres bring its lyricism, dramatic tension and poetic atmosphere to life.
