This iconic composition for two pianos was one of the first in which Olivier Messiaen collaborated with the young pianist Yvonne Loriod, then a student at the Paris Conservatory. The composer had a distinct role for each piano: "I've given the first piano the rhythmical difficulties, the tone clusters, everything that involves speed, charm and sound quality. The second piano is given the main melody, the thematical elements, everything that requires emotion and strength."
