A high point of the Viennese operetta! Franz Lehár was one of the most successful composers of operettas from the 20th century. His well-received operettas The Tsarevich and The Land of Smiles included arias that soon found their way to the general public. In The Tsarevich, Lehár managed to create the moving and melancholy atmosphere of Russian culture.

Alexei, the son of Tsar Peter the Great, leads a strict and sober life. Although no women are allowed to enter his quarters, he cleverly circumvents his father’s orders. Disguised as a boy, dancer Sonja perform at the palace and after a while, Alexei discovers she is in fact a girl. His initial anger gives way to affection, and true love blossoms between them.

The Tsar, however, is of the opinion that Sonja should disappear as he has found an official bride for Alexei. Sonja is forced to confess she leads a dissolute life so that the Tsarevich would cast her off. Initially, Alexei believes this story, but he soon discovers his father’s true intent.

The two lovers elope to Naples, but Alexei’s uncle then reminds him of his duties to the fatherland. Alexei does not intend to return to Russia, but when the Tsar s suddenly dies, he is expected to pursue his duty. Will he choose for the fatherland or for Sonja’s love?
