Son of God Mass
As usual, the Flemish Radio Choir presents a Christmas concert with a twist: classic Christmas carols in a different guise and hidden gems that enhance the Christmas atmosphere like no other. An unforgettable musical bath to end the year on a high note.
The beating heart of the programme is the remarkable Son of God Mass. It is a mass for choir, organ and saxophone by the British composer James Whitbourn, renowned for his ability to move and inspire. The Son of God Mass is a remarkable work, first performed in 2001. It interweaves traditional Latin liturgical texts with modern elements and contemporary expression.
Contemporary British composer James Whitbourn uses beautiful and expressive musical language, effortlessly interweaving ancient choral traditions with contemporary sounds. In this way he masterfully bridges the past and the present, resulting in a spiritual musical experience that transcends everything and everyone. Whitbourn is a versatile composer, concentrating on choral concert music and music for film and television. He started his career as a producer for the BBC. This influenced his work and he is praised for the direct contact he establishes between performers and the audience. Among other things, he wrote the lush orchestral score for the acclaimed BBC series Son of God, music for the commemoration of 9/11 and for the Queen Mother's funeral.
With music by James Whitbourn, Cecilia McDowall, Edmund Rubbra, Peter Wilhousky, Judith Weir, Jeremy Filsell, Herbert Howells, Sir David Willcocks, Fredrik Sixten and Christmas carols.
