This event has been cancelled. We will inform all ticket holders personally.

“It is with deep regret that Volksopera has to cancel all running productions as of September 1st, 2022, and will not start any new production for the time being.

This decision is the result of the recent distribution of structural subsidies for cultural organisations, from which Volksopera has been excluded, in combination with the direct consequences of the corona period on the artistic and general operation of the production house. Under the current circumstances, Volksopera cannot continue and has to draw the curtain, on 'L'île de Tulipatan' among others.

Volksopera would like to thank all spectators and partners for the past years and wishes them all the best! We'll meet again!"

-------

Volksopera presents an amusing operetta by Jacques Offenbach. On the imaginary island of Tulipatan, two young people fall in love. This would hardly be remarkable, were it not for the fact that their relationship risks to uncover a terrible secret, because their gender has been hidden from them since their birth.

King Cacatois of Tulipatan does not realise that his only son Alexis is in fact his biological daughter. He has been told he has a son to secure the succession to the throne. The situation is hardly any better in the household of Tulipatan’s prime minister. To avoid her biological son having to do military service, his wife has told everyone he is a girl. When the two fall in love with each other, they find it hard to fulfil their conventional roles.

An amusing story about identity, the balance between freedom and duty, love and making choices. Accompanied by Offenbach’s refreshing music, the story behind Tulipatan is both hilarious and topical.

Played in French, with Dutch surtitles
