H.M.S Pinafore is one of the most beloved comical operettas in the entire Anglo-Saxon world.

Set aboard the naval ship of the same name, the story of the captain’s daughter unfolds as she falls in love with a sailor of a lower class, whilst her father wants her to get married to an old admiral, who is also First Lord of the Admiralty. In other words, good parentage versus true love. Unadulterated entertainment, witty and funny texts and joyful melodies that get stuck in your head.

Gilbert’s libretto of Her Majesty’s Ship Pinafore takes the mickey out of the class system in a typically British manner, makes fun of the Royal Navy, delightfully mocks hypocrisy, snobbism and English chauvinism and pokes fun at incompetent characters rising to the top.

Legendary duo William Gilbert (screenwriter) and Arthur Sullivan (composer) scored their first blockbuster with H.M.S Pinafore. Together, Gilbert and Sullivan wrote fourteen operettas.

After its première in 1878, the piece began its international career. This iconic operetta with Sullivan’s unforgettable melodies and Gilberts nimble libretto has since been performed regularly, and has sometimes been updated, as recently in a series of performances by the English National Opera in London.

In English, with Dutch surtitles
