Rachmaninoff, who only adventured in the string quartet in his youth, left us two unfinished scores that highly reflect the influences of Tchaikovski and Borodin. Considering the masterful polyphony and melodic ingenuity of these short pieces, it is all the more regrettable that he eventually ignored the genre.
