Good wine needs no bush. More than fifteen years after his victory in the Queen Elisabeth Competition, pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort is touring Flanders with the complete series of five Beethoven concertos. In Leuven, he will play the very joyful Piano Concerto No. 2 and the much-loved Piano Concerto No. 5 (or Emperor Concerto), technically the most difficult one.

Liebrecht and Casco Phil have been inseparable musical partners in crime for over 15 years. They are pulling out all the stops in 2023 to celebrate this joint milestone.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), a composer who crossed their joint path early on, is central to that celebration. All his concertos are included in the programme, and the event will be a discovery of Beethoven’s personal musical history.

“We want attendees to explore Beethoven’s concertos”, Liebrecht explains. “The artistic element is paramount, not the competitive aspect.” When Liebrecht and Casco Phil debuted the piano concertos in 2014, the novelty of it all hadn’t worn of yet. There was the excitement of the first performance, the urge to master a score, to reach a milestone.

Fifteen years later, it will be an intriguing rediscovery. A more conscious approach to the repertoire. This large-scale Beethoven project can only benefit from more life and performing experience, as well as more musical knowledge. He calls his own performances meaningful now. The music with which he was raised has had the time to mature.
