Shostakovich owes his reputation to his symphonies. But throughout his entire life, he dedicated a huge amount of attention and his most personal inspiration to chamber music. Contrary to his 'official' works, there were no formal requirements or programme imposed. The composer could therefore discretely express his personal doubts. He composed with more audacity and with greater diversity in musical resources than usual, making him sound more modern and moving. In short, he gave the best of himself!
