Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951)
Pierrot lunaire,
op. 21

Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire, composed to poems by the Belgian symbolist Albert Giraud, is an ironic composition, both tender and grotesque, in the style of cabaret songs. It marks the invention of Sprechgesang (spoken-sung declamation) and is among the first atonal works. Its original instrumentation had a great impact on the composition of chamber orchestras in 20th-century music.
