Erik Satie was a strange figure, but with an insane amount of creativity! He considered himself a composer “who ended up in an old world at a young age”. He didn’t care about traditions and had little respect for established names. Unabashedly, he went his own way, looking for unconditional musical freedom.

This theme day consists of three parts, with one aspect of Satie’s artistry bubbling to the surface in each part: first his tortuous faith, then his talent for satire and finally, his love of absurdities.

Sacré Satie

In Sacré Satie, Jan Michiels juxtaposes Satie’s piano piece Uspud with Liszt’s Via Crucis. Both pieces are religious, but in Liszt’s case, devotion prevails, whilst in Satie’s case, confusion takes over. The title alone - Ballet catholique - may raise many eyebrows.
