Ott x Ravel

Alice Sara Ott and Belgian National Orchestra
Wed 09/06/2027 - 20:00

Strauss, Ravel and Sibelius throw open the windows on a hot summer’s evening. They let in a breeze of pure passion and irresistible local colour.

Richard Strauss sets the tone with Don Juan: bold, reckless and irresistible. The orchestra plunges into an adventure of energy and longing, with a flair that instantly stimulates all the senses.

Maurice Ravel then takes over the torch with his Piano Concerto. Without beating about the bush, this music grabs you by the throat: a sultry blend of sensual jazz, blues and Parisian elegance. Internationally acclaimed pianist Alice Sara Ott makes the piano vibrate and sing. Her playing is crisp and playful in the outer movements, tender and moving in the dreamy middle section, where time seems to stand still for a moment and Ravel’s jazzy elegance comes into its own.

And then there’s the Boléro. Ravel distils music from repetitive mechanics into an unprecedented climax: a single rhythm, a single melody, repeated with ever-increasing intensity. What begins as restraint and detachment develops into something physical, obsessive and inescapable. Conductor Matthew Halls masterfully leads this dance, which you simply cannot tear yourself away from. The sun sets, but the glow remains.
