Joan As Police Woman embodies the versatility of New York: chaotic, intense and always captivating. Over the past 30 years, she has worked with icons such as Jeff Buckley, Lou Reed, John Cale and Iggy Pop. Her music balances between pop, rock and jazz, with profound lyrics and a soulful voice. On her tenth album Lemons, Limes and Orchids, she sounds more intimate than ever. Live? Not to be missed out on.

Born Joan Wasser, Joan As Police Woman is truly a child of New York City: chaotic, multifaceted and always engaging.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, she has performed with her soulmate Jeff Buckley, Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, Damon Albarn, John Cale, Laurie Anderson, Sufjan Stevens, Anohni, Beck and drummer Tony Allen (Fela Kuti). Just last year, she toured with Iggy Pop. On her latest and tenth album, the rather intimist Lemons, limes and orchids, we also hear bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello, among others.

Her music has often been rightly praised for its depth as well as its introspective and emotionally charged lyrics on themes such as love, loss and longing. At the same time, she has the ability to combine different genres effortlessly. With her soulful voice, she therefore creates a special sound with elements of pop, rock and jazz. Vulnerable yet sophisticated, according to her own creed: “Beauty is the new punk rock”. No-one incorporates influences from Al Green, Sonic Youth, Nina Simone or Bad Brains as smoothly as she does.

Those who do not yet know her urgently need to explore her oeuvre. But first of all, you must experience her performance live.
