Although the genesis of Bach’s instrumental overtures remains uncertain, they’ve all been composed in the style of the dance suite. Their so-called 'alla francese' opening is an unmistakable echo of the increasing influence of French culture. Bach probably composed the second overture (for solo flute) for Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin, lead flautist of the Dresden court orchestra.
