We are finally reuniting with Turkish singer and multi-instrumentalist Derya Yıldırım and her band Grup Simsek, after they performed at Wereldfeest 2018. The members of the group are from Turkey, Germany, France and England. This means that the band embodies the so-called ‘outernational’ generation: Turkish people who grew up in a country other than Turkey.
Derya Yıldırım's unique voice conveys both melancholy and longing. Grup Şimşek, who excels in hypnotic Anatolian psych-pop, accompanies her musically. This creates a soothing mix of Turkish folk, grooves and psychedelic rock.
Derya Yıldırım performs both her own compositions and gems by other Turkish artists, such as (protest) singer Selda Bağcan, rock pioneer Barış Manço, Moğollar (founding fathers of Turkish folk rock) and Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet. Highly recommended for fans of Altin Gün and Khruangbin.
