Czech That! presents a triple portrait of three Czech grandmasters. Leoš Janáček is the Benjamin Button of classical music: as he grew older, his creativity and the energy in his music increased exponentially. Almost all of his masterpieces were written after the First World War, when the composer was nearly sixty.

At the same time, two other Czech composers - Bohuslav Martinů and Erwin Schulhoff - were almost forty years younger. Although these two young men never renounced their Czech roots, their careers were mainly abroad: Martinů blossomed in Paris, while Schulhoff's career was mainly in Germany.

No wonder, then, that the three Czechs each developed their own style. First, the Pavel Haas Quartet introduces you to their intense and compelling chamber music for strings. Then I SOLISTI take you on a tour of the colourful, frivolous and often humorous world of their wind music.

13.30 h - Intro

Musicologist Pieter Bergé will give an introduction to this theme day and go over both concert programmes.

The Czech Pavel Haas Quartet is the absolute world's best in quartet repertoire. Then again, when it comes to Czech quartets (or sextets), they are really unbeatable. Quite an honour to welcome them to Leuven once again. They will introduce you to the intense and compelling chamber music for strings by Czech grandmasters Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Martinů and Erwin Schulhoff.
