For the traditional Christmas concert in Vlierbeek abbey, the Flemish Radio Choir draws inspiration from the rich British tradition. In the music of Jonathan Dove, John Taverner and Benjamin Britten, Christmas time appears to be a transcendent moment. We come together, sing Christmas carols, give each other our best wishes and exchange presents.
A dark night, lit only by the twinkling stars, suddenly turns into a vast ocean of light. Jonathan Dove gives this concert a magical start. John Tavener then takes over and describes the wonder of the birth of Christ while paying tribute to the Virgin Mary as a universal mother.
The message of hope and peace connected to this birth was translated by Benjamin Britten into his clear and impressive Christ’s Nativity. Will Todd brings a moment of reflection, and then we find each other around a crackling fire, singing wonderful traditional Christmas carols such as Jingle Bells, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, Silent Night, etc.
