You know them, those black-and-white silent films from the beginning of the last century. Images without sound, but not without meaning.

Together with film composer Stéphane Orlando, the Ataneres Ensemble takes us back to those nostalgic times. In Chaplin's Beginnings, the Ataneres Ensemble accompanies three well-known short films from Charlie Chaplin's early career: Kid Auto Races at Venice, The Vagabond and The Immigrant. Orlando has written a unique, haunting and fitting score for this production, which will be performed live with the films, conducted by the composer himself.

Just like the good old days ...

The Ataneres Ensemble guarantees wonderfully accessible and high-quality classical music with a fresh sound. For this production, the ensemble collaborates with Stéphane Orlando, a renowned Belgian composer for film, opera and performance. Orlando has written music for over 500 silent, documentary, fiction and animated movies.

To this day, silent films offer a unique window into our past. In the days before sound recording, they were shown in cinemas with live musical accompaniment. Pianists, organists and even small orchestras were hired to provide the soundtrack during the screening. Live music was important not just for understanding the film, but also for enhancing the visual elements and creating suspense, humour or drama.

With music by Stéphane Orlando.
