Vierne’s Sonata for cello and piano is a mature work and part of a dark period in his life, loaded with trials. After devoting nineteen years on a voluntary basis to the organ class at the Paris Conservatory, he was passed up for the appointment as professor. Deeply hurt by this injustice, Vierne threw himself into the composition of this sonata. With its concentration of thought, formal perfection and burning vehemence, it has the violence of a real cry of anger and the will to win despite everything.
