In her native Istanbul, Büşra Kayıkçı had a wide range of interests from a young age: piano, ballet and painting. She studied interior architecture and design and in 2011 began to incorporate more and more elements of music into her designs, inspired by composers such as John Cage and Michael Nyman.
Kayıkçı became convinced of the idea that a composer and a designer follow the same path. The materials are different, but the basic principles are the same.
Büşra Kayıkçı: "In a way, as a composer, I design a place, and the audience walks around it and moves within its architecture. I believe that when we listen to a song, we travel from space to space and from time to time. When a melody touches you deeply, you can experience a place with your mind and soul.”
Her focus shifted increasingly to composition, resulting in her debut album Eskizler in 2020, followed by Places on Warner Classics in 2023.
With her warm and minimalist pieces, Kayıkçı treads similar ground to her idol Nils Frahm, to whose Piano Day compilation she also contributed. In particular, she is fascinated by the sound of her instrument and how it evolves in response to her manipulations.
In 2022, she gave her first concert outside Turkey ... with us at 30CC! She was one of the guests at our annual Piano Day happening. Since then she has toured all over Europe and recently even Japan. Now she returns to where it all began. Not on the quays of the Bosporus, but almost on the banks of the river Dyle, where she will give an exclusive acoustic concert in a beautiful setting.
“Belgium has a special place for me, because two years ago I was here in Leuven and it was my first European concert... It has a special place in my heart.” (Klara interview, 2023)
EXTRA: EXPO 'Ecstasy & Orewoet' AT PARCUM
Your concert ticket also gives you access to the new exhibition Ecstasy & Orewoet at Museum PARCUM (Park Abbey). In this exhibition, PARCUM and KADOC explore 700 years of mystical experience and draw parallels to our contemporary culture.
How far are you willing to go in search of the ultimate experience? Do you dare to completely detach from reality and step outside yourself? How do the medieval mystics relate to our contemporary culture? Are there similarities or are they worlds apart? Do our modern practices lead to the same experience? In Ecstasy reveals new perspectives on ecstasy by juxtaposing religious heritage and contemporary art.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 10 May 2025.
