Leçons de ténèbres pour le Mercredi saint
François Couperin’s Leçons de Ténèbres, composed in 1714 for the Abbaye royale de Longchamp, are moving works traditionally performed during the Holy Week. Based on the Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah, they reflect Christ’s loneliness leading up to his Passion. The third Leçon in particular stands out: two voices intertwine in lush, sometimes dissonant melodies, while the subdued atmosphere of contemplation remains untouched.
