During the night of 12 to 13 August 1961, East and West Berlin became divided by barbed wire. In the new Dutch musical Checkpoint Charlie, with lyrics by Stef Bos, we follow a few Berliners who suddenly find themselves cut off from their friends and relatives, and are denied opportunities because they are no longer welcome in the other half of the city. An intriguing musical about dreams, powerlessness and resilience.

The dream of the singer who is about to break through is shattered by the barbed wire fence, while her kind-hearted father enjoys life in East Germany.

The bored border guard who does his rounds day in day out does not really understand what he’s doing here. He talks to a grandmother who cannot visit her newborn grandchild because of the wall.

On the other side of the wall, in the West, not everyone is happy either.

There, at the checkpoint, an American soldier is standing guard. He sees people who have woken up on ‘barbed wire Sunday’ in a parallel world. He sees them groping in the dark, separated from their family, their dreams and the city as they knew it. By the wall.

The wall that divided and connected them.
