Louis Janssens and Willem de Wolf met when, as a teacher at drama school, Willem saw Louis enter his class and for a moment thought he saw himself as the student he was 35 years ago. He saw the same eagerness, the same ambition, the same uncertainty wrapped up in bravura. Even that very lanky figure with its suggestive lock of hair hanging nonchalantly over his forehead was, with some backlighting, almost Willem.

Conversely, Louis also recognised himself in Willem. As someone you could become, even though you might not want to. As a so-called adult, experienced, with uncertainty wrapped in resignation. What do you really see when you see yourself in the other? Is recognising yourself in the other the basis for learning?

Analoog will be an intergenerational performance in which people sing and talk about childhood, about mothers and about searching for disruptive loves. A score about learning processes taken and wanted. About earlier and later, but also about how to position yourself as a young – or older – person in the world.

A performance as a large open plain on which Willem looks back and forward with music, text and images, and Louis looks forward and back. And somewhere in this tangle of perspectives they look at each other at a certain moment, of course.

Performance in Dutch, with English surtitles

Press

  • "Reflection and looking forward meet in this splendid play of words and hall of mirrors" (★★★★★ de Volkskrant)
  • "Like a magic jawbreaker, 'Analoog' reveals increasingly colourful layers and emotional flavours. The piece is a portrait of a bond between these two men, but it transcends that single bond and, just as Ernaux masterfully demonstrates in her work, becomes an illustration of how generations challenge and support each other." (★★★★ Knack Focus)
