Is watching dance equally as creative as dancing itself? The French choreographer and philosopher Noé Soulier thinks so. To stimulate a physical reaction with the audience, he transforms recognisable actions such as hitting, throwing and grasping into dance movements.
In this puzzle of continuously changing movements, alongside six dancers, Soulier collaborates with two percussionists: Tom De Cock and Gerrit Nulens from the Ictus-ensemble. Their drums add commas and full stops, pause a series of movements, or start an action again.
This creates a poetic universe in which movements almost literally ‘touch’ you. With ‘The Waves’, Soulier ventures to the limits of extremely precise dance writing and pure improvisation. Radio Klara proclaimed ‘The Waves’ one of the best performances of 2018.
