De Sjel - Patricia Vanneste

Sjel - Patricia Vanneste

Until March 28th, all visitors of the Leuven city cemetery can immerse themselves in the musical art installation 'Sjel'. In this impressive glass cube, you can listen to the strings and voice of Sohnarr, the solo project of musician and composer Patricia Vanneste.

In the spring of 2020, Sohnarr launched ‘Coral Dusk’, a record Patricia Vanneste composed and recorded during a solo trip through the vast landscapes of Sweden and Norway.

On October 16th of last year, right in between both lockdown periods, she also presented the record at a live performance in 30CC/Schouwburg. Initially, the Sjel installation would also have been presented to visitors in the fall, but Covid postponed its inauguration until February 1st.

What is SJEL?

The SJEL is a travelling installation, designed by Patricia Vanneste and architect Sam De Bock. The installation symbolises the creative process of the record ‘Coral Dusk’ and enhances the listening experience.

Architecturally, it is a pure pavilion, a shelter that blends into the surroundings thanks to its reflective walls. SJEL also refers to the Norwegian word for soul or essence.

On the inside, the Sjel has one big window and one seat oriented outwards. Through the speakers, you can hear the music of 'Coral Dusk'.

As a visitor, you're invited to forget about yourself. For 45 minutes, you can escape reality, as well as rediscover your essence, contrary to what you display to the outside world daily. That identity, your mirror image, is the last thing you see before entering the SJEL and also the thing you leave behind.

On one of the inner walls of the Sjel is written "It's by daring not to turn away that you reach the essence of yourself. As it's by disappearing, that you connect, whilst merging with your surroundings. Listen and feel. It's not empty in here."

You can freely visit the Sjel, if you respect the following corona measures:

  • Come alone, or with your family bubble of max. 4 people.
  • Keep a distance of 1.5 meters towards other visitors.
  • Wear a face mask.
  • Disinfect your hands.
