In the history of the string quartet, Schumann’s compositions are a world unto themselves, incomparable to those of the Romanticism of Mendelssohn and Brahms. The intimate tone and the ‘vocal’ line of song composer Schumann are combined with references to the late Beethoven and his peculiar ars poetica in regards to the themes.
