Vox Luminis
Domenico Scarlatti
Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757)
Stabat Mater a 10
Domenico Scarlatti is best known for his 555 keyboard sonatas, but he also composed remarkable sacred vocal music. His Stabat Mater for ten voices stands as one of the most striking examples in this repertoire. Written for ten soloists, the piece constantly varies its vocal scoring, creating a rich palette of sonorities. Although Scarlatti draws on the polyphonic tradition, he uses it primarily as a vehicle for sharply defined text‑based music. Using the rhetorical and contrapuntal techniques of his time, his music is both restrained and deeply expressive.
