7 July 2016. The makers of BERLIN have just performed their play Zvizdal at the Berliner Festspiele. They meet a gritty elderly German. They get talking and are captivated by his unlikely walk of life. A few conversations and weeks later, they decide to hang the final part of their Holocene cycle, each of which centres on a city or village somewhere in the world, on him.
The Making of Berlin is a portrait of a city built around the extraordinary life of a Berliner who worked as an orchestra director with the Berliner Philharmoniker. A man who would preferably go back in time to complete an unfinished chapter of his life.
BERLIN, with the help of the orchestra of Opera Ballet Flanders and radio station Klara, among others, undertook to assist the man in realising his dream. Gradually, however, they find cracks in his account and the whole project comes into question.
The BERLIN company's work is always at the crossroads between documentary and theatre. Armed with cameras, interview techniques, editing tables AND actors, they immerse themselves in situations and unravel various storylines.
Dutch and German spoken, with Dutch and English surtitles.
