Surfer Rosa Begijntje
One spring morning, the beguine Symforosa is visited by a gardener in her courtyard who has come to prune the grapevine. She falls in love with him, but doesn't dare tell him. And when she is about to do so anyway, the gardener comes with surprising news.
In Surfer Rosa Begijntje, Adriaan Van Aken links the language of Felix Timmermans (1886 – 1947) to the sound of The Pixies.
The title refers both to the Heimat novella De zeer schone uren van Juffrouw Symforosa begijntjen (1918) and to the classic rock record Surfer Rosa (1988).
In almost all of The Pixies' songs, quiet and loud, full and empty passages alternate. And that is also what Adriaan wants to achieve with this performance: to put very big music that floats on contrasts against that miniature story in that delicate language.
