A few years after Beethoven’s death, a version for string quintet of the famous Kreutzer sonata was released. The origin of this version is still subject to debate: was it written by publisher Simrock, by Ferdinand Ries, by one of Beethoven’s students or by the maestro himself?

The question remains unanswered, but this transcription certainly breaths the spirit of the original. The distribution between the voices is impressive: themes, rhythms and elaborations shift from one instrument to another, as if this was the original composition.
