In the background of the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles, three people meet at a hotel lobby in Paris. The Great War is over, the atmosphere is exuberant: the twenties are ready to roar.

Young, brilliant economist John Maynard Keynes, an openly bisexual man at a time when this is still punishable, is one of the negotiators. One night, he falls for the charms of Lydia Lopokova, a ballerina at the Ballets Russes.

She mistakes an African man in the hotel for a servant. That man turns out to be Charles D.B. King, ambassador to Liberia, the only free African country. King is therefore the only black negotiator at the conference. They have a conversation about freedom, something they all seem to be looking for.
