Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Piano Quartet, op. 47
Schumann composed his Piano Quartet op. 47 in 1842, immediately after completing the famous Quintet for piano
and strings op. 44. Where the quintet tends towards a dialogue between the piano and the strings section, the quartet favours equality between all four instruments.
It is a subtle and refined work that is considered the pinnacle of compositions for piano quartet, a foundation on which all succeeding generations would base themselves.
