The String Quartet in F major, the first of the six quartets of Opus 18, marks Beethoven’s debut in one of the most demanding genres of chamber music. Composed in the late 1790s, the work shows how he absorbed the models of Haydn and Mozart, while already allowing his own distinctive voice to emerge. The slow movement, inspired by the tomb scene from Romeo and Juliet, unfolds an exceptional dramatic intensity. At the same time, the quartet as a whole reveals a lively and inventive style and a close exchange between the four instruments.
