In the early nineteenth century, chamber music arrangements of concerti were quite common since large subsidised orchestras or public concerts did not yet exist. None other than clarinettist Roeland Hendrikx and pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort are the soloists in the pocket-sized version of two famous concerti.

Chamber music arrangements of large concerti are often more authentic and transparent than the original versions, because they bring out the expressive essence of these works. For instance, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart proposed two options for the performance of his Piano Concerto No. 12: accompaniment by a complete orchestra or by a string quartet. This work belongs to his earliest Viennese piano concertos and sounds very upbeat and effervescent. ‘These concertos are a happy medium between too heavy and too light’, Mozart wrote.

In the case of Carl Maria von Weber, there is no distinction between the genres of chamber music and clarinet concerto. His Clarinet Quintet is in fact a concerto with quartet accompaniment.

And his very original Clarinet Concerto No. 1 can be easily played by a quintet.

It doesn’t matter, because the music continues to be virtuoso and theatrical, with a slow part which is an icon of intimacy in which Weber murmurs, sings and caresses with the clarinet.

  • W.A. Mozart, Kegelstatt Trio, KV 498
  • C.M. von Weber, Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 73 (arranged for quintet by Michael Drapkin)
  • C.M. von Weber, Variations on a Theme from the Opera Silvana, Op. 33

“Clarinettist Roeland Hendrikx and his ensemble play wonderfully and perfectly express Weber’s early romantic intentions. The delightful interplay between Hendrikx and pianist Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort makes the flexible virtuosity a real treat ...” (**** De Standaard)
