Near Stefanie Claes’s house, there is a baby hatch. It fascinates her immensely and she tries to understand it. The image of a newborn baby detached from its roots seemed like the beginning of a tale she found important to tell. During her quest, she searched through old city archives, and discovered the phrase ‘strictly speaking, a foundling does not have a past’. Yet everyone comes from somewhere. 'Mia Kermis' is a tribute to all children who have ever been abandoned as well as to their imagination and curiosity for their origin.
By means of a host of home-made puppets and drawings, Stefanie Claes tells the pictorial and wordless story of Mia Kermis, a foundling who grows up and sets off in search of her own roots. The result is an intimate miniature performance for grownups as well as teenagers
