The Flemish Radio Choir pays tribute to Vic Nees, the godfather of Flemish choir music who passed away exactly ten years ago, with In memoriam, Les Flandriens II . This prestigious choir has always been fond of contemporary music, and especially if it is also Belgian. Flemish choir music is deeply rooted in their DNA!
Vic Nees was the esteemed chief-conductor of the Radio Choir for more than 25 years. He and his choir members performed a lot of Flemish music and brought many forgotten scores back to life. At the same time, he built rich sound archives from Flemish choir music and provided many amateur choirs with numerous compositions that were liked and sung a lot.
Nees died in 2013, but his music lives on. And the memory of Flemish composer Wim Henderickx and Estonian composer Urmas Sisask, who passed away recently, also lives on thanks to their music.
In the spirit of Vic and Wim, who encouraged and cherished young talent, the Radio Choir launched the first ever Composition Contest Vic Nees in 2020, in collaboration with Koor&Stem and ComAV. Stijn Dierckx and José Retra are the recent winners of this competition and will receive a place in this programme and a recording of their compositions. In addition, the Radio Choir will receive support from local amateur choirs for each concert. Flemish choir music is alive and kicking!
