Guitarist Julian Lage has been praised for over twenty years. This is remarkable, considering he's only 34. He shared the stage with Carlos Santana as a ten-year-old. At the age of twelve, he joined Gary Burton on stage at the Grammy’s, came under the guidance of master guitarist Jim Hall and at the age of fifteen, he started his studies at Stanford University.

In recent years, he has fulfilled the promise of his exceptional childhood and blown away the jazz guitar world. With two Grammy nominations under his belt, he combines his sizzling performance and melodic musical elements from pre-bebop, folk music and swing with a light rock feel. His unassuming style conceals a technical prowess that is almost impossible to match.

Today, Julian Lage is regarded as a leading guitarist, both by more traditional country and jazz circles and by the avant-garde. He plays in Chris Thile’s show Live from Here (including Brad Mehldau and The Punch Brothers) and regularly collaborates with avant-garde composer John Zorn. In June 2018, Lage was voted Rising Star Jazz Artist in the famous Downbeat Critics Poll. He definitively conquered our hearts with his trio during Leuven Jazz 2019

His new album View With a Room - where he expands his trio with fellow-guitarist Bill Frisell - was launched op September 16th and is met with high praise:

You'll get the first chance to discover the album live in our venue, where Lage presents himself in an excellent trio with Jorge Roeder (bass) and Eric Doob (drums).

We are happy to open the night with the promising band aki, a new, young jazz collective in the capable hands of drummer Anke Verslype.

Their music is based on uncomplicated, sober melodies. When they improvise, they push their boundaries. Together, they create a unique sound that carries you away on a stream of warmth and melancholy. Aki brings visual jazz that can make you feel incredibly nostalgic and will not leave you unmoved. They occupy the middle ground between cinematic landscapes, jazz and minimalism.

Last year, they proved themselves on the Jazz Middelheim stage, this year you can discover their new album with us.
