Australian pianist and composer Sophie Hutchings is making her second trip to her favourite venue in Belgium. Her refined post-classical music ranges from the intimate and understated to the grand and compelling, yet is always imbued with deep emotion and intimacy. As a child, she often played the piano on her own and developed her dreamy, repetitive style, which later became her trademark.

Hutchings has been nominated twice for the Australian Music Prize, has received praise from publications including The Guardian and MOJO, and has released eight critically acclaimed studio albums, including her Mercury KX debut Scattered On The Wind. Her music featured in films such as Baby Teeth and True Spirit and took her to international stages in Japan and Europe.

Outer presents Glowing Mountains in the Sky: a captivating journey between light and dark, where modern classical, chamber pop and alternative rock blend into a multi-layered, cinematic experience. The album was created between 2020 and 2024, mainly in remote locations in Iceland, Norway and the Czech Republic, where field recordings formed the basis for rhythmic patterns and atmospheric backdrops.

The result is a cinematic blend that hints at elements of dream pop and shoegaze: dynamic, layered compositions with a strong emphasis on piano, texture and atmosphere. Composer Tom Soetaert deliberately sought out contrasts between light and dark – a quest that is also reflected in the album’s title. On the single Svartsengi, you can also hear the unmistakable sound of Norwegian trumpet player Arve Henriksen.

A perfect night out for listeners of Duyster, Nachtbaders and Vuurland.
