Jacques Duponchel (ca. 1620-1685)
Vêpres pour saint François d’Assise, Rome, 1665
Jacques Duponchel, the Franciscan organist and composer, was originally from Douai. His vocal works, mainly devoted to the religious repertoire, alternate and combine the virtuosity of the Italian style with the skilful counterpoint of the Franco-Flemish school. Harmonia Sacra evokes an Office of Vespers for the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi at the Basilica Santi XII Apostoli (Rome) in 1665: an opportunity to hear some of the musical specificities of the Franciscan rite.
