GLORIOUS BODIES

A physical, moving and hopeful circus and dance performance about the carrying capacity of the human body. About seeing and being seen, about the interface between classic and contemporary circus with six acrobats aged between 53 and 67 years with a past in classic circus. Circus history archived in the body. Old age and ageing continue to be taboo subjects in our society, and certainly in the world of circus. Just like top athletes, most acrobats stop training intensively at a certain age. How does this affect their perfect physique? Can you ever be at peace with your own body as a human being? Can you be in complete harmony? GLORIOUS BODIES sheds light on the ageing process in a particular manner. It is something that happens to all of us, now, at this instant.

This show starts from partner acrobatics and movement. It breaks through stereotypes about the older generation. An impressive, charming and humorous performance showing what humans and the human body are capable of and that age is not a barrier.

Circumstances is a circus and dance company under the artistic guidance of Piet Van Dycke. In 2018, he graduated as a choreographer from Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Tilburg. Since then he has worked as a circus and dance producer, performer, coach and teacher at various art organisations. For several years, he has been active at dOFt, fABULEUS, Cie Woest, TeaTime Company and LAP. In the coming three years, he will work under PLAN, a development platform in Brabant (NL). He won the Jacques de Leeuw prize in 2018 and the BNG Bank Dance prize in 2021. Van Dycke’s work is characterised by the fusion of dance and circus for young and old alike.

Circumstances performed in a sold-out Schouwburg during the spring of 2023 with their previous production, EXIT. This performance was also selected for Het Theaterfestival.
