Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Sonata for clarinet and piano in F minor, opus 120 no. 1
Although second on the programme, Brahms is the key element in this concert.
Indeed, Berg explicitly drew inspiration from his predecessor when composing his opus 5.
The four parts of both compositions have a similar scheme, which Berg manages to keep extremely short and tight, in a crystal clear notation and with an underlying powerful dramaturgy.
All of this is marked and coloured by the rich timbre of the clarinet.
