Double bill: Derek Gripper (ZA) / Solo (SE) & Indré (LI)
South African guitarist Derek Gripper is influenced by both Western classical music as well as the vocal tradition of West African griots. He’s constantly developing his own musical language. For the album Libraries on Fire he transcribed note by note the complex compositions of Malinese kora player Toumani Diabaté for the classical guitar. This masterpiece rightfully earned him a Songlines Award in 2017.
Solo & Indré
In this concert, griot and kora player Solo Cissokho and kanklės player Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė combine the warmth and playfulness of the southern hemisphere with the nostalgia and peacefulness of the north. The marvellous sounds of the kora’s nylon strings and of the steel strings of the kanklės blend in with each other beautifully. The interactive conversation is made up of Solo Cissokho’s cheerful, grainy voice and Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė’s sometimes more subdued singing style.
