Vargkvint

Vargkvint is the musical project of Stockholm-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Sofia Nystrand. Inspired by oceans, forests and folklore, she mixes (post)classical, folk and pop to create her own sound. Her concept album Hav (The Sea) from 2019 was warmly received internationally and in 2022 Nils Frahm also asked her for the compilation Piano Day vol.1.

She recorded the follow-up Månens hav (Sea of ​​the Moon) in Frahm's renowned Saal 3 studio in Funkhaus (Berlin) and released it this summer on his prestigious LEITER label. On this new album, Vargkvint explores the relationship between the moon, the sea and climate change. The familiar felted piano, delicate voice, saw and glockenspiel are back, as is her husband and frequent collaborator Jakob Lindhagen, but the whole thing is enhanced with subtly powerful sound design. This is an album for dark nights, for quiet meditation, for gazing in wonder at the night sky. References such as Sigur Rós, Agnes Obel, múm, This Mortal Coil, Cranes ... are never far away.

Nystrand and Lindhagen also form a duo live. With his focus on strong melodies and unusual instrumentation, Jakob juggles film work, collaborations and solo releases. His album Memory constructions often returned to the 'best of 2022' lists.

Vega Trails

The beautiful collaboration between bassist Milo Fitzpatrick (Portico Quartet) and saxophonist Jordan Smart (Mammal Hands) resulted in the insanely impressive album Tremors in the Static (Gondwana Records) in 2022. Somewhere in the playing field between jazz, classical and contemporary, they find their musical form, both warm and melancholic.
